The core team that brought you EuroSCORE II, Sam Nashef and Christopher Smith, is reunited to organise EuroSCORE 3. We look forward to renewing old acquaintances and welcoming new collaborators.

Samer Nashef

Project Lead


Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

Mr Nashef is the inventor of EuroSCORE. Mr Nashef qualified as a doctor at the University of Bristol in 1980, and trained in general surgery in London and Exeter. His specialist training in cardiac surgery was in Glasgow, Sheffield, Manchester and Bordeaux in France.

He was appointed consultant surgeon at Royal Papworth Hospital in 1992. He practises all types of cardiac surgery, with a special interest in minimally invasive coronary bypass, mitral repair and surgery for atrial fibrillation. He is also interested in surgery of the aortic root.

Jason Ali

Transplant Surgeon


Consultant Transplant Surgeon

Mr Ali qualified as a doctor at the University of Cambridge in 2008. During his medical training he has completed a PhD investigating the immune response to transplanted organs. He has undertaken his specialist cardiothoracic surgical training at Royal Papworth Hospital and was appointed to a Locum consultant post in 2022.

He has a significant interest in medical education and is the director of studies for clinical medicine for Churchill College, University of Cambridge, in addition to various teaching and examining roles for the Clinical School of Medicine.

Christopher Smith

Project Manager


EuroSCORE Project Manager

Chris Smith is the EuroSCORE Project Manager and has long been involved in the EuroSCORE project – having supported the recalibration exercise for EuroSCORE II back in 2010.

Daniel Saxton

Head of Business Services

Daniel is the Head of Business Services at the world-renowned cardiothoracic specialist hospital, Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Since joining the Trust in 2012, Daniel has successfully led several departments. He is now responsible for overseeing the hospital’s charity, external education portfolio and commercial activities.

Daniel has background in Private Healthcare, Charity Management, Corporate Service and Governance, Marketing Communications and Business Development.

As an innovative and results orientated Healthcare Manager with experience in the NHS and Private Healthcare Sector Daniel is passionate about supporting positive change across the NHS to improve services for patients. He works with colleagues and industry stakeholders to explore innovative mechanisms to advance healthcare and to drive efficiencies and innovation across healthcare services both in the UK and internationally.

In addition to his role at Royal Papworth, Daniel is a board member of UK International Healthcare Management Association and served as their Chairman for an 18-month term.

Taylor Maxine

Head of Fundraising

Maxine Taylor is the Head of Fundraising for Royal Papworth Charity, which is proud to have funded the development of EuroSCORE over the years. The Charity understands the need for developing innovative products that advance medical breakthroughs, support clinicians, and help our patients. This is why the Charity has funded the EuroSCORE 3 project.
